Institute of Golf
Among the top 30 collegiate golf courses
The Course
Regularly ranked as one of the nation's best golf courses, the
6,927 yard MSU Golf course is an 18 hole, par 72, PGA sanctioned,
Championship course. The architectural design of our golf course
provides a mix of both playable and challenging golf holes. It is rare
to play MSU and not use every club in your bag. Holes #3, #5, and #15
are all long par 4s lined with large, mature pine trees and out-of-bounds
stakes; they are a true test of patience and courage. The ninth
hole, a 650 yard par 5, is a demanding dog-leg left that has only been
reached in two shots twice, one of the players to accomplish this feat
is John Daly.
The design variety of the university course is outstanding. The par 3s all vary in length and a different club is needed on each. The par 5s, other than #9, each provide ample landing areas for a safe lay up as well as wonderful risk reward opportunities to go for the green in two. The hills of the land provide fun elevation changes and the plethora of mature trees that cover the course pose a challenge to those that are hitting the ball off line.
The esthetics and memorability of the course come together on the three lakeside holes, #16, #17, and #18. These holes have a 40 acre lake running along the left side and large trees running down the right side. The beautiful landscape of Mississippi farmland can be seen across the lake, creating a sense of serenity while playing these three picturesque yet difficult golf holes.
Upholding the traditional values of the game is an important part of the relaxed atmosphere prevalent here at Mississippi State University Golf Course. The university golf teams and the Professional Golf Management students spend countless hours at the facility, constantly practicing, teaching, and learning.
